Finland: Ruka Winter Activity Break

Snowy fun on the Finnish slopes

Snowy fun on the Finnish slopes

Ruka is a ski resort based on a 490 metre high fell in Kuusamo, close to Finland’s border with Russia. It boasts one of Europe’s longest ski seasons, running right through from October until June and it home to the Nordic Skiing World Champions. With 29 groomed downhill runs and 500km of cross-country tracks, those with a passion for skiing will be in absolute heaven here.

Ruka’s centre has recently been transformed into a beautiful pedestrianised village, with a host of shops, bars and restaurants, which create a bustling après-ski atmosphere.

There is a wealth of snow activities for you to try during your Ruka Winter Activity Break, from snowshoeing, to husky safaris and even snowmobile adventures. You’ll sample the best that the local area has to offer as you traverse the snow-covered landscapes either learning to snowshoe or behind an eager pack of adorable huskies.

You’ll be staying at the Ruka Tonntu, a luxurious holiday base that is just a short walk from the nearest ski lift. Choose from comfortable hotel rooms or apartments which boast great views of the resort and relaxing saunas to welcome you in from the cold at the end of your days filled with adventure.

Let’s not forget, of course, that a trip to the snowy North is also a chance to catch a glimpse of the famous Northern Lights. Often seen from the wintry countryside that surrounds Ruka, the Aurora is a truly spectacular phenomenon and something that, once seen, you will certainly remember forever.
