Norway: Northern Lights New Year Voyage
A journey to Norway’s most spectacular destinations
Celebrate the festive season with a unique Northern Lights New Year Voyage along the Norwegian coast. Spend 13 days amongst the most astounding scenery and enjoy a tour filled with history, culture and entertainment. Bask in the beautiful architecture of Trondheim and Tromsø, and become enchanted by the natural beauty of each destination. Norway is exceptionally beautiful during winter as its landscapes are enveloped in a pearlescent frosting of snow and many of the lakes are transformed into ice. This season provides the ideal conditions to view one of the world’s most astounding natural phenomena, the Northern Lights. Whilst on the New Year’s Eve voyage, you will have the opportunity to visit the places where the sensational colours of the Aurora Borealis are known to appear.
Norway is home to an array of fascinating wildlife, and as the ship winds its way amongst the breathtaking vistas, you may witness the majesty of the whales that inhabit these waters, or the various species of birds that perch upon the rugged coastline. Keen photographers, adventurous travellers and those on a quest for a unique holiday will enjoy the unique experience of a Christmas and New Year voyage in Norway.
Day 1 - Bergen
Arriving at Bergen Airport, transfer to the ship. Before the Northern Lights New Year Voyage departs for Ålesund, perhaps take the funicular to the mountain tops and enjoy the endless views that reach across the city.
Days 2 to 3 - Ålesund at Christmas
Docking in the charming town of Ålesund on Christmas Eve, we can look forward to tonight’s celebrations and our evening meal. Christmas Day can be spent exploring the Art Nouveau splendour of Ålesund, which was rebuilt after a fire in 1904 destroyed many of its buildings. Today it is a stunning location renowned for its architecture and exceptional vistas.
Day 4 - Trondheim
The fourth day of the voyage introduces you to the delights of Trondheim. Approaching the harbour, you will be greeted by rows of pastel-coloured wooden houses resting by the water. Step onto the shore and delve into the rich past of this medieval city, which boasts Norway’s sole Gothic cathedral and the impressive Castle Zion.
Day 5 - Cross the Arctic Circle
As we venture further North we cross the Arctic Circle and make our way towards Tromsø. This area has particularly promising conditions for sightings of the Northern Lights so as the night skies approach, look skywards and hopefully you will catch a glimpse of the elusive Aurora Borealis.
Day 6 - Tromsø
This diverse city is awash with sites of interest and guests on the Northern Lights New Year Voyage can visit galleries, museums and stunning buildings, including the exquisite Arctic Cathedral. See the scenery from a different perspective when you take a husky sled ride across the snow-dipped terrains.
Day 7 - Hammerfest and the North Cape
Steeped in history, Hammerfest is home to the Sámi people and you will have the opportunity to learn more about their intriguing culture when you disembark the ship. We then sail past the North Cape, which stands at over 1000ft high on the island of Magerøya.
Day 8 - Kirkenes
As we sail through the picturesque Arctic waters, take to the deck to enjoy the epic views or relax in the ship’s panoramic lounge as we head southwards on the Northern Lights New Year Voyage.
Day 9 - New Year’s Eve
Once again we visit the beautiful city of Tromsø, where you can witness the fireworks display from the ship and see in the New Year at the Midnight Concert, which is held at the Arctic Cathedral.
Day 10 - Svolvær
Today the ship takes us on a journey through the Lofoten Islands towards Svolvær, where we will spend the night. You will pass some of Norway’s most spectacular scenery and wildlife, so why not capture these moments on camera for everlasting memories of this Northern Lights New Year Voyage?
