Spitsbergen: A Taste of Spitsbergen- Arctic Adventure
An authentic experience of Arctic life
Out in the Arctic wilderness of Spitsbergen is the ideal basecamp for the adventurous traveller: the Trapper’s Station. This replica of an original trapper’s station offers guests an authentic Arctic experience. Spitsbergen itself is the picture of a winter wonderland, with over 60% of its surface covered in glaciers and snow-capped mountainous backdrops enveloping the frozen fjords and white-blanketed landscapes. The island is the largest in the Svalbard archipelago and home to the administrative centre of the region: Longyearbyen. The Trapper’s Station is based 10km from this small community, giving you ample seclusion to enjoy unparalleled views on your Spitsbergen Arctic Adventure.
Made up of the Trapper’s Hut, the Secondary Station and the wooden Gamme (a type of wooden tee-pee), the Trapper’s Station offers the chance to truly experience real life in the Arctic. Your accommodation is not yours alone however; it also houses the kennel where some 80 to 90 sled-pulling Alaskan huskies reside. The dogs will be more than happy to play while you’re staying here, making the Spitsbergen Arctic Adventure a wonderful chance to get close to these magnificent animals.
Your Spitsbergen Arctic Adventure comprises three overnight stays in the Trapper’s Station along with one night at either the Ship in the Ice Hotel or the Isfjord Radio. The Ship in the Ice is the world’s only ice-bound ship hotel. Seeming to have run aground in the ice, it actually sails up Tempelfjorden every autumn where it is trapped in the ice for the winter before being opened up to guests for a unique overnight stay. The Isfjord Radio, on the other hand, is a former communications centre that has been transformed into a luxury hotel in the Arctic wilderness. With a fascinating history and comfortable interior, it provides exceptional accommodation. The journey to either accommodation will be an exhilarating snowmobile expedition, taking in the breathtaking scenery and wildlife. Many of the creatures here can only be found in the Arctic so ensure you have your camera at the ready.
During your Spitsbergen Arctic Adventure you will also be able to experience a half-day dog sled, exploring the landscapes and taking in the unspoiled wilderness views. This is an experience not-to-be-missed and one that will stay with you forever.
